World War-I and Indian Forces Memorial at Ypres, Belgium
The Menin Gate in Ypres, Belgium, is the most important WWI memorial and has the names of more than 400 Indian soldiers, who fell at the Ypres salient, engraved on it. It was unveiled in 1927.
Over 130,000 Indian soldiers fought in WWI in the Ypres salient with more than 10,000 making the supreme sacrifice.
In 2002, on request of the Government of India, a Memorial Stone to honour the Indian soldiers was installed on the lawns of the Menin Gate. In March 2011, the Memorial Stone was replaced by a replica of the Indian National Emblem.
