Independence Day Celebrations in Brussels
The Embassy of India in Brussels celebrated the 69th Independence Day of India at the Embassy premises on August 15, 2015.
The celebrations commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag by the Ambassador of India, H.E. Mr. Manjeev Singh Puri followed by the singing of the National Anthem. Ambassador read out the address of Hon'ble Rashtrapatiji to the nation on the occasion. Thereafter, he highlighted the landmarks in the last one year that demonstrated the intensification of our bilateral relations with Belgium, Luxembourg and the European Union - the Hon'ble Speaker of the Lok Sabha led an Inter-Parliamentary delegation to Belgium in June 2015 during which she met with the Presidents of the European Parliament and the Belgian Parliament besides the President of Belgian Senate, the commemoration of the centenary of the World War I in Belgium in which 130,000 Indian soldiers fought and over 10,000 made the supreme sacrifice and the launch of the e-Tourist Visa for Belgium on August 15, 2015. Ambassador also mentioned the recent developmental initiatives of the Government of India –the Make in India, Digital India—and other efforts such as Swachh Bharat where the world could contribute.
Ambassador's address was followed by a brief cultural programme comprising of renditions of patriotic songs. A musical group comprising of Indian students at the Katholic University of Leuven in Belgium also presented patriotic musical compositions.
Members of the Indian community from across different cities of Belgium and Luxembourg engaged in all walks of life as also officials of the Indian Embassy in Brussels participated in the function. Over 450 people including members of the local Belgian and Luxembourgian community participated in the celebrations.
