Ambassador of India H.E Ms. Gaitri  Issar Kumar’s speech at the

Janmashtami Celebrations, Radhadesh - August 13, 2017

Hare Krishna!!

Ladies and gentlemen

Fellow devotees of Lord Krishna,

I thank the Radhadesh Community

of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness

for inviting me to join you in celebrating Janmashthmi today.

I convey to you warm greetings and felicitations

on behalf of the Government and people of India.

This auspicious day is not only an occasion

to celebrate the birth of Baby Gopala

the 8th incarnation of Vishnu,

it is, above all, an appropriate moment

to reflect on the message of Krishna, the teacher

on the battlefield of Kurukshetra.

Although Krishna has been worshipped over the centuries as the God oh love, tenderness and compassion

and in various parts of India and the world

in his various forms and avatars

with different names -  Vithoba in Maharashtra , Jagannath in Puri, Balaji in Andhra and Srinath in Rajasthan,

it is his guidance to Arjuna – contained in the Bhagvadgita

that is relevant and bears reflection even today.

Krishna’s advice to Arjun about the nature of life,

its dilemmas, the impermanence of matter,

the permanence of the soul,

man’s duties and responsibilities,

the nature of true peace and bliss and inner liberation

are instructive for all of mankind .

There is no comparable treatise to the masterful treatment in the Bhagvadgita - of the full range of ethical and moral dilemmas of human life.

It presents answers to choices - and enumerates responsibilities towards self and towards others.

One of the most profound lines in the Bhagavad-Gita, to me, is in the fifth chapter of the Bhagavad-Gita – in its 10th verse :

One who performs his duty without attachment, surrendering the results unto the Supreme Lord,

is unaffected by sinful action,

as the lotus is untouched by water.

Lord Krishna's message of devotion to duty, detachment from the outcome or reward, remains the most apt guidance today  for the salvation of humanity.

It would be ideal if more people across the world

could be guided by the teachings of Lord Krishna

to build a peaceful, enlightened and just society.

It is also personally a great privilege for me to have   this opportunity to join you in paying tribute  to His Divine Grace, A C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada Founder Acharya of the world wide Krishna Movement ,

In 1998, Atal Behari Vajpayee, then Prime Minister of India had noted: and I quote:

If the Bhagavad Gita, the holy text of the Hindu traditions,

is printed in millions of copies and scores of languages

and distributed in all nooks and corners of the world,

the credit for this great sacred service goes chiefly to ISKCON.

For this accomplishment alone, Indians should be eternally

grateful to the devoted spiritual army of Swami

Prabhupada, the founder of the Hare Krishna movement,

and to his followers ...

The arrival of Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada in the United States in 1965

and the particular popularity his movement gained

in a very short span of twelve years

must be regarded

as one of the greatest spiritual events

of the century.

I would also like to congratulate the Radhadesh Community for their magnificent role in propagating Indian art and cultural heritage in this region and for their contribution to the strengthening of mutual understanding between its people and their fellow devotees across the continents.

With these words, I thank you all once again

And wish you an inspiring & joyful Janmashtami.

Hare Krishna!!
