Dinner discussion on the theme “India @70, Modi @3.5” held at European Parliament

 

A dinner discussion on the theme “India @70, Modi @3.5” was co-hosted at the European Parliament on 4 December 2017 by H.E Mr. Jakob von Weizsäcker, Member of European Parliament (Germany), and Smt. Gaitri Issar Kumar, Ambassador of India to Belgium, Luxembourg and the European Union.

 

Members of the European Parliament, Members of the National Parliaments of European nations, members of the diplomatic core, high-level officials from the European External Action Service and the European Commission, and members of the European academic circles and local media attended the event.

 

In her opening remarks, Smt. Gaitri Issar Kumar spoke about India’s new model of economic development that was based on the principles of sustainability, inclusivity and commitment to progressive reforms, the geopolitical challenges faced by Europe and the opportunities arising out of the renewed India-EU strategic partnership.

 

At the dinner discussion, moderated by Mr. Jakob von Weizsäcker, the keynote address was delivered by Shri. Swapan Dasgupta, Hon’ble Member of Rajya Sabha.

 

Shri. Dasgupta touched upon on the sweeping reforms undertaken by Government of India under the leadership of Prime Minister, Shri. Narendra Modi, and the transformative economic and social impact of these initiatives.

 

Shri. Anirban Ganguly, Director, Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation (SPMRF), New Delhi, expanded on the proactive manner in which structural changes to the Indian economy are being implemented, including the demonetization drive and its role in rooting out corruption while incentivizing the digitization of the economy. Shri. Shishir Bajoria, Chairman, IIM, Shillong, shared his perspective on the much-anticipated Goods and Services Tax.

 

Responding to the presentations made by the Indian speakers, Mr. Andre Sapir, Belgian economist and Senior Fellow at Bruegel, made an analysis of the model of economic reforms implemented by the government led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the effect of initiatives like demonetization on the Indian economy, the economic forecasts for India, and the different developmental models followed by India and China.

 

Mr. Geoffrey Van Orden, Member of European Parliament (UK) and Chair, Delegation for relations with India, Mr. Cristian Dan Preda, Member of European Parliament (Romania) and Rapporteur of the European Parliament’s Report on EU’s Relations with India, Mr. Christian Hirte, Member of the German Bundestag, and Mr. Kai Kuestner, WDR/NDR Correspondent, led the interaction of the eminent guests with the main speakers on the occasion.

 

While concluding the discussions, the participants agreed that the partnership between India and Europe has great potential and called for institutionalizing parliamentary cooperation to reinforce the existing mechanisms of cooperation.
