Visit of Vice President of India Hon'ble Hamid Ansari to Myanmar

Hon'ble Vice President of India will be visiting Myanmar between 5-8 February, 2009 at the invitation of Vice Senior General H.E. Maung Aye. Minister of State for Defence Shri Pallam Raju and three Members of Parliament will be accompanying him, besides a number of senior officials and a large business delegation.
The visit of Vice President to Myanmar is taking place in the context of an increasing engagement between India and Myanmar. Our relations are rooted in shared historic and cultural ties.
Vice President will be visiting Nay-Pyi-Taw, Yangon and Mandalay. He would be calling on Senior General H.E Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) and his counterpart Vice Senior General Maung Aye, Vice Chairman of the SPDC.
Our relations with Myanmar have become a truly multi-faceted one, with cooperation in a range of developmental and other projects in the areas of roads, power, hydro-carbon, oil refinery, transmission lines, tele-communications, IT etc. Our trade and economic cooperation has also seen considerable progress, which includes upgradation of border trade to normal trade at the border points Moreh-Tamu and Zowkhatha-Rhi, opening a new border trade point at Avangkhung in the State of Nagaland in India and expansion of the list of commodities under the Indo-Myanmar Border Trade Agreement by an additional 18 items. Normal banking facilities have also been established through United Bank of India.
