Visit of Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and Nonproliferation Ellen Tauscher

U.S. Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and Nonproliferation Ellen Tauscher visited New Delhi on 12-13 November 2009 for Strategic Security Talks with Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao. The talks follow upon a decision taken by the External Affairs Minister and the U.S. Secretary of State in New Delhi in July 2009 on a new dialogue architecture. During her visit, Ms. Tauscher also called on National Security Adviser Shri M K Narayanan and Special Envoy to the Prime Minister Shri Shyam Saran.

The Strategic Security Talks covered global and regional strategic issues as well as developments in multilateral forums on disarmament and nonproliferation. The principals reaffirmed their commitment to the timely and full implementation of the bilateral civil nuclear agreement. They emphasized the constructive spirit of partnership with which the two sides approach issues of common interest in the area of disarmament, nonproliferation and international security. They agreed that the discussions were detailed and useful. The next round will be held at a mutually convenient date in Washington D.C.
