69th Republic Day of India Celebrated


On the occasion of the 69th Republic Day of India, the Embassy of India, in Brussels, which is India’s Mission to the European Union, Belgium and Luxembourg , hosted grand receptions to celebrate this National Day in Brussels and Luxembourg on 22 January and 24 January 2018 respectively. The customary flag-hoisting ceremony took place at the Mission’s premises on 26 January 2018.


In Brussels, senior officials of the Government of Belgium, European Commission, European External Action Service, Members of European Parliament, members of the diplomatic corps and members of the Indian Diaspora in Belgium attended the National Day Reception.


An exhibition of paintings by renowned Indian Artist Shri Om Prakash and cultural performances including an Odissi dance recital and instrumental music sessions were organised.


In her address on the occasion, Ambassador of India, Smt. Gaitri Issar Kumar, spoke about India’s transformation into the largest functioning democracy in the world, and the nation’s evolution from an economy that had been included in a list of ‘Fragile Five’ to one of the fastest growing economies in the world today. She said that the nation firmly believed that military, political and economic progress go hand in hand with a strong commitment to India’s enduring values and ancient traditions – chiefly, rule of law, peace and non-violence. She mentioned the favourable predictions made by international institutions about India’s growth prospects and said that India is pressing ahead with reforms that are progressive and ambitious – guided by the mantra , ‘reform , perform, transform’.


She recalled the historic visit of Their Majesties, the King and Queen of the Belgians in November 2017, a year that marked the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between India and Belgium, and said that the discussions and exchanges at the highest level during the visit as well as between the official and Government as well as business delegations would go a long way in adding substance and new dimensions to further strengthen the excellent relations between India and Belgium.


Similarly , she said, during the visit of the President of the European Council as well as the President of the European Commission to attend the 14th India-EU Summit in New Delhi, a number of decisions had been taken – reflected in a comprehensive Joint Statement to broaden the India –EU agenda to many more areas of common interest – from science and technology to counter–terrorism , education and civil nuclear co-operation. She stressed that India attaches high value to her Strategic Partnership with the European Union and wishes it strength and success .


The National Day Reception in Luxembourg was the first to be hosted in Luxembourg in many decades. The event was held at the Chambre de Commerce, Luxembourg with the support of the Indian Business Chamber of Luxembourg.


Senior officials of the Government of Luxembourg, and members of the Indian Diaspora in Luxembourg attended the event.


The Chairman of Chambre de Commerce, Luxembourg, Mr. Michel Wurth, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Government of Luxembourg, H.E Mr. Gaston Stronck and Ambassador of India, Smt. Gaitri Issar Kumar, addressed the guests on the occasion.


Mr. Michel Wurth spoke about the remarkable success of Luxembourgish companies that have invested in India and vice-versa and expressed his hope that that this successful economic cooperation between India and Luxembourg would continue to grow in future.


Mr. Gaston Stronck, who had previously been Luxembourg’s Ambassador to India, warmly recalled his tour of duty in India and enumerated the new avenues that India and Luxembourg could explore avenues for realising the potential of their bilateral economic co-operation.


Smt. Gaitri Issar Kumar said that the India’s National Day Reception in Luxembourg marked the 70th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Luxembourg and that in 2018, India and Luxembourg look forward to enhanced political, economic and cultural exchanges between the two countries.


A Flag hoisting ceremony was organised at the premises of the Mission on 26 January 2018. Renowned social activist and Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Shri. Kailash Satyarthi attended the event and was invited by Ambassador to address the gathering.


Ambassador of India brought to the guests the message of the H’ble President of India delivered by him to the nation on the eve of Republic Day 2018.


Members of the Indian community in Belgium, members of socio-cultural organisations and friends of India joined the celebration.
